Service Learning in Vietnam
Mai Chau: Village Revitalization
The official statistics from the Mai Chau District Authority show that over 30% of households in the village are considered poor, with an income of less than $20 per person per month. This is significantly lower than the average income in Vietnam, by almost five times.
Based on the village's challenges and numerous meetings with local villagers, our service learning school trip to Vietnam will carefully consider several criteria to determine the project, including the community's desire for participation, participatory decision-making by all members, the availability of an experienced community facilitator, potential financial assistance, and the proportion of resources provided by the community themselves.
Students who participate in this program will have the opportunity to actively engage in a construction project that directly addresses the challenges faced by the village. Through hands-on involvement, they will contribute to improving the local infrastructure and living conditions of the community. By working alongside local villagers and leveraging their knowledge and skills, students will not only learn practical construction techniques but also develop a deeper understanding of the issues faced by underprivileged communities. This experience will foster empathy, resilience, and a sense of social responsibility as students actively contribute to making a positive impact on the lives of the villagers they serve.
